Corrosion protection for air conditioning units.

Corrosion problems in air conditioning units can be caused by various factors including exposure to harsh environmental conditions like humidity, salt, pollutants, chemicals, and other airborne particles, poor maintenance, manufacturing defects or inferior materials, equipment ageing and general wear. To prevent or minimize corrosion in air conditioning units, regular maintenance, proper installation, timely repairs of leaks, and protection against environmental elements are crucial. This includes routine cleaning, inspections, and addressing any issues promptly to extend the lifespan of the AC unit and ensure its optimal performance. Corrosion protection for air conditioning units can be vital in various situations, here are some important considerations:.

Harsh Environments:
In areas near the coast or where the air is laden with salt, the risk of corrosion is higher due to saltwater exposure. Corrosion protection measures, such as coatings or materials designed to resist corrosion, can help extend the lifespan of the air conditioning unit.

High Humidity Environments:
In regions with high humidity levels, the potential for moisture-related corrosion is increased. Protective coatings and treatments can be beneficial in preventing moisture-induced corrosion.

Industrial and Chemical Exposure:
In industrial locations with exposure to corrosive chemicals, protecting air conditioning units from corrosion is important. Acidic or corrosive fumes can deteriorate the unit’s components over time.

Long-Term Maintenance:
Corrosion protection measures can reduce maintenance costs and downtime by preventing or delaying the onset of corrosion-related problems. This is especially important in commercial and industrial applications where HVAC systems are essential for operations.

Extended Equipment Lifespan:
Proper corrosion protection can contribute to the longevity of the air conditioning unit, saving money on replacement costs.

Common methods of corrosion protection for air conditioning units include:

Coatings:
Applying anti-corrosion coatings or paints to the unit’s components to create a barrier.

Galvanized Steel:
Using galvanized steel for components and frames can provide resistance to rust and corrosion.

Regular Maintenance:
Regular cleaning and maintenance to remove corrosive materials like dirt, debris, and salt deposits.

Placement and Enclosure:
Positioning the air conditioning unit in a way that minimizes exposure to harsh elements, or enclosing it in a protective housing, can be effective.

Use of Corrosion-Resistant Materials:
Investing in air conditioning units made from materials that are inherently resistant to corrosion can be a wise choice for long-term durability.

Lubricant and corrosion protection spray

SuperCORR A multitasking lubricant and corrosion protection spray solving problems across industry.

Corrosion protection spray

Originally developed to comply with military standards for a lubricant and corrosion protective for the USAF (MIL- DTL- 8717B Type 1 Avionics cleaning and corrosion prevention and control) SuperCORR A is now the industry standard for in service maintenance by military and commercial airlines and MOR facilities worldwide. It is recognised for its unique formulation which contains extremely long-lasting, proprietary anti-corrosive inhibitors providing a superior lubrication coefficient and protecting components against moisture, wear, general and fretting corrosion, surface static electricity, corona, and other electro migration problems. The ultra-thin non-flammable lubricant film is only 7 microns (0.0007 inch) thick and is formulated without sulphates, chlorides or halogens to meet the EU RoHS directive. It is unexcelled in preventing deterioration and contamination on all surfaces of electronic equipment and metal components.

Its use in aircraft is well established for maintenance but major aerospace and turbine manufacturer is currently completing trials with SuperCORR A to protect machined parts in transit and storage, worldwide, under variable temperature and humidity conditions against corrosion during long term storage. The protective film is self-sealing during movement and handling and can be removed before use if necessary.

Amongst other established uses for mercantile lubrication and corrosion protection suppliers of marine maintenance packages, which include SuperCORR A, to ships on docking. These are used for routine lubrication and anticorrosion maintenance in the harsh conditions experienced at sea. The aerosol cans make access to parts easy for the engineering crew in difficult locations on ship. Unpainted mild steel will not rust on exterior surfaces directly exposed to sea water spray for at least 6 months protecting electrical connectors, switches, chains, drive shafts from corrosion while maintaining lubrication on moving surfaces.

In another interesting application SuperCORR A reduces maintenance under extreme conditions to protect the metal edges of the composite blades on wind turbines. These are subject to the continuous corrosive effects of wind, rain and salt laden sea spray which erodes and corrodes the metal. The protective film produced by application of SuperCORR A is impervious to water and lubricates the airflow across the blade edges preventing corrosion of the metal. Safety on these wind turbines where maintenance engineers are working at great height and perilous conditions of exposure to high winds entails reliance on critical fall arrest equipment. Corrosion in the bearings, clutches and wires used in the arrester mechanisms can lead to failure and potentially serious injury or loss of life. SuperCORR A protects against corrosion in these safety critical components.

The oil and gas industries use SuperCORR A as a reliable easily applied protective coating against corrosion of tools and parts in storage and transit. High humidity and wide fluctuations in temperature experienced on oil rigs at sea and on land need the same protection and lubrication  for  critical fall arresters used on wind turbines and in other situations where working at high levels in extreme weather conditions imposes the same risks.

Monitoring systems, electronics. switches and moving surfaces also need protection and SuperCORR A being based on nonorganic lubricants will not attack or degrade the materials used in manufacturing the components but reject water from protected surfaces preventing shorts, and by preventing fretting corrosion ensuring good connections and smooth movement in bearings and chains.

Portable diesel and LP generators are widely used in the oil and gas and mineral extraction industries in remote, hostile environments. Between flights aircraft services are powered by generators during loading and unloading and maintenance.  All these uses require connection and disconnection, often many times a day. Connector seals, when broken, allows water, sand or dust to penetrate and with the flexing of the connector cables allows sufficient movement between the metal surfaces of the connector pins to produce fretting corrosion. A simple spray between connection breaks ejects water and particulates and protects and lubricates the contacts improving reliability of supply.

Building and construction industries offer other unusual uses for SuperCORR A. Unpainted hatches, grilles, and window furniture are galvanised if manufactured in steel and anodised if aluminium or a zinc alloy. These need protection in storage against scratches and once installed exposure to wind and especially acidic rain dulls surfaces and produces unsightly white surface corrosion. An onsite spray with SuperCORR A on completion of the installation protects the surfaces with an invisible film and at the same time applies a lubricant film to hinges and bearings in handles and other moving parts such as window openers  reducing the needs for maintenance often in inaccessible places at high level.

In all forms of transportation from Amtrac trains, DLR and other lightweight rail systems and for protection of transit equipment and services for underground tunnels and systems to motorsport. racing and rally cars, electric cars and on emergency vehicles SuperCORR A is used for protection and lubrication of connectors, electrical systems and switches, mechanical controls during manufacture, assembly and servicing. Haulage is another area where the ability to displace water from exposed contacts can ensure reliable operation in extreme conditions.

The unique combination of properties in one small aerosol can gives maintenance and service engineers a very safe solution to an enormous range of problems.

Most people associate corrosion control with rust, which only happens in things made of ferrous metals such as steel girders, ships, iron pipes, steel reinforcement rods, and steel tanks and is the reason metals deteriorate and fail. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals corrode on contact with both fresh and saltwater as well as water vapour. They will also corrode when they come into contact with chemicals, liquid acids as well as acidic vapours, salts and bases, and bacteria.

Corrosion is also a problem in electronics from circuit breakers and contactors to wire bond connectors and soldered components on a printed circuit board. Electrical connectors and plugs are very prone to corrosion as well as non-ferrous metals and alloys such as copper and aluminium. For purposes here, corrosion can be defined as a chemical or electrochemical reaction between a material, usually a metal, and its environment that produces a deterioration of the material and its properties.

Corrosion is an increasingly serious and costly problem that can lead to plant and equipment failures which range from being an annoyance to being catastrophic. Failures caused by corrosion could and do lead to a direct failure of a component which could affect the entire system and can not only be very expensive in terms of down time to repair or replace plant and equipment, but can also prove to be very costly in loss of productivity but to human life.

Preventing disaster with corrosion control – Electrical component failure

If an electrical component fails that affects your car that is just an annoyance and can be repaired fairly inexpensively and if you’re driving the car rolls to a stop and you get out. However, if an electrical system failed because of a corroded electrical contact in a control circuit which caused another electrical failure in the master fuel control system on an airliner at 30,000 feet with 250 people on board that could prove to be catastrophic. While the electrical contacts in both cases failed due to corrosion both failures could very well have been prevented by using SuperCORR A in a Corrosion Prevention Program incorporated into all routine maintenance programs.

“Self-healing” ultra-thin film barrier

It is much simpler and a lot less costly to prevent corrosion than to repair or replace the damaged equipment or component that failed because of corrosion. The photographs show the effects of protecting metal surfaces and components in extreme condition with a SuperCORR A aerosol.

SuperCORR A is a non-conductive, non- flammable, hydrophobic, ultra-thin film lubricant and corrosion preventive compound. It is a “self-healing” ultra-thin coating that lubricates and protects metals, motors, electrical and electronic components from moisture, salts, chlorides, acids, and oxidation.

Corrosion of electrical components is very prevalent problem and one that can be prevented. Preventing moisture from coming in to contact with the electrical components is the key. An ultra-thin film of SuperCORR A will not only prevent moisture from coming in to contact but will displace moisture that is there already.

SuperCORR A is hydrophobic, that is it repels water and forms a “self-healing” ultra-thin film barrier that prevents moisture from coming into contact with the coated electronic components.

Aquus CL-One Water Based Cleaning

Aquus CL-One is THE general-purpose concentrated cleaning system based on a mixture of surfactants, does not include toxic solvents and exhibits a unique combination of characteristics that are not found in other commercially available products.

Aquus CL-One for water based cleaning is biodegradable, non-flammable, non-toxic at used concentrations and, unlike almost all other surfactant systems, is both hydrophilic (water attracting) and oleophobic (oil-repelling).

Aquus CL-One offers excellent emulsion-breaking capability in addition to its unusual combination of properties that makes it so practical for a wide range of industrial applications.

Aquus CL-One concentrated cleaner is formulated to offer one solution for all cleaning applications reduces time and costs by removing the need for multiple cleaning products usually needed to deal with the challenges presented by the wide range of soils, oils and other contaminants which need to be removed.  Safe for the environment and users, contains no solvents and is biodegradable within 30 days. One of the innumerable industry specific applications are discussed below but many more will be experienced in day to day operations. With only one product for all cleaning applications incorrect selection or dangerous uses can be avoided.

MANUFACTURING, ENGINEERING and MAINTENANCE

Formulated to tackle the numerous cleaning applications required by the manufacturing and engineering industries. Concentrated Aquus chemistry is activated by water, varying concentration levels allows the most economical solution to be chosen for specific applications from parts cleaning to surface preparations for finishing or heavier soiling on process machines all from one product. Some of the hundreds of applications are discussed below.

Our applications experts and samples of the product are available by completing the contact form.

PARTS CLEANING

Ideally suited for cleaning protective coatings, grease and soils from used or parts during manufacturing processes.  Aquus CL-One can be used in parts washing equipment or dipping tanks without modifications and leaves no residue after drying.

Oil and grease separate from the water and coalesces on the surface of the cleaning solution which can then be skimmed off for recovery and recycling. Precipitated solids free of hydrocarbons can be removed by settlement or in filtration systems. The cleaning solution can be reused continuously within its chemical effectiveness parameters for efficient and economical use.

GENERAL CLEANING

Aquus CL-One is remarkably efficient removing oils, greases, and accompanying dirt from most surfaces.  It can be applied by wiping surfaces, mopping floors or in rotary floor cleaning machines, or by low or high-pressure spray. Aquus CL-One is also an effective cleaner in industrial kitchens removing grease and baked on deposits on internal surfaces of ovens and trays. For maintenance of machines, engines etc oil and grease is easily removed pre and post assembly making inspection and repair easier, quicker and cheaper by returning equipment to use.

PREPARATION FOR PAINTING OR POWDER COATING

Aquus CL-One is an excellent choice for cleaning mild steel and ferrous metal parts which are not painted immediately. Process oils and grease on the parts protect the surfaces from changes in humidity but once removed flash rusting can occur while drying.  Aquus CL-One prevents this leaving an invisible barrier on the metal surfaces providing extended corrosion protection during storage, fabrication or assembly before finishing. The barrier film can be painted over without additional rinsing and without affecting adhesion of paint or powder coatings.  Any cleaning system can be used hand wiping, dip tanks, or pressure washing.

WASTE TREATMENT SYSTEMS

Aquus CL-One is extremely effective in separating oil, water, and solids in drains and conveyor traps and sumps on automatic honing, turning and grinding machines when using water based lubricant and cooling liquids. The emulsions are broken allowing cleaned metal dust, shavings and dirt to precipitate to the bottom, the solution of Aquus CL-One and water retains the active cleaner in the middle layer, and oil and grease float to the top. The efficiency of oil/water separators in plant waste treatment systems are significantly increased while the amount of toxic waste requiring disposal after treatment is significantly reduced. The cleaning solution can be reused to treat more waste streams until biodegradation occurs and it no longer operates effectively.
